Feature Highlight: Extended Depth of Field – EDOF

EDOF: Extended Depth Of Field

Microscopes and cameras are used for almost any kind of application, and almost every application can encounter depth-of-field issues. Some USB digital Dino-Lite microscope models with Extended Depth of Field – shortened to EDOF – help users look at the “big picture” at higher magnification levels with minimal blurriness.

Use the slider above to see the effects!

The depth of field is the distance between the nearest and farthest points in your image that appear sharp or in focus. When looking at a tall object or an irregular shaped object at a higher magnification, there may be some parts where your object is in focus and others where it is not. This would indicate that you have a limited depth of field. If you are using a higher magnification level, depth of field issues come into play often.

Once you focus on your object’s highest point*, click on the EDOF option in the software. The Dino-Lite then automatically captures images at different depths and stacks them together to make a clear and concise image.

*The Dino-Lite’s internal mechanism will move from the top to bottom.   (If you change the settings, EDOF can also move from the bottom to top).

You can also control the stacking manually. (Here is a PDF link to an advanced how-to guide).

Stacking images is only one feature EDOF can provide.

The same internal procedure can be used to activate Refocus mode. By right-clicking your mouse, you can pick a different focal point in your image. This does not physically move your USB digital microscope out of position.

Dino-Lite USB models with EDOF also feature One-Touch Autofocus.

This allows your USB digital microscope to automatically focus and refocus as long as your subject is within focal range. By using your trigger of choice, you can tell the digital microscope to autofocus in different ways.
