How Certified Trichologist Arisa Sorimachi Uses Dino-Lite

“Hair is the Leaf, Scalp is the Soil”

As specialized scalp care continues to grow, practitioners face a common challenge: helping clients understand what is actually happening beneath the surface. We always appreciate hearing how specialists integrate our handheld digital microscopes into their practice. Certified trichologist Arisa Sorimachi recently shared a detailed look at how high quality imaging shapes her salon consultations, educational programs, and live events.

In Her Own Words

“I’m Arisa Sorimachi — a certified trichologist, co-founder of Blow Me Away salon here in Los Angeles, and I’m currently building an online certification program to train the next generation of scalp health specialists. The way I think about it is simple: hair is the leaf, the scalp is the soil, the follicle is the root. If you want healthy hair, you have to start with the scalp — and to work on the scalp, you have to actually see it.

I’ve been using Dino-Lite cameras for over ten years now. That alone probably says the most about how I feel — they’re reliable, the quality is exceptional, and they’re genuinely simple to use. The support behind them has always been there, too. Even when it was time to move up to a newer camera, the team took real care walking me through the options and helping me choose the one that actually fit the way I work. That kind of attention is rare, and it’s a big part of why I’ve stayed with Dino-Lite all these years.

At the salon I use it during our head spa treatments, looking at the client’s scalp before we begin so the whole session is guided by what’s actually there that day. Most people look at their skin every single day — but they’ve never once seen their own scalp. So when I show it to them up close, live on the screen, they’re always amazed. Suddenly I can walk them through what I’m seeing: what condition their scalp is in, what type it is, and from there, exactly what treatment, what kind of home care, and what products will actually suit them. It turns a vague guess about their hair into a clear, specific plan they can understand.

Under regular white light, the detail is already incredible — the hair, the follicles, sebum, flaking, the scalp surface, any buildup. It gives me a genuinely clear read on the structure of the scalp. What I didn’t expect was how much the UV light would add on top of that. It works by making certain materials fluoresce — so it doesn’t replace the white-light view, it adds another layer of observation. It can make certain buildup, residue, and naturally fluorescent materials much easier to see, and red-orange follicular fluorescence may point to porphyrin-related activity that isn’t as obvious under normal illumination.

The part I care about most is how you interpret that. Fluorescence isn’t a diagnosis — what lights up can reflect microbial metabolites, keratin, sebum-related compounds, or even product residue — so I treat it as an observational finding, read alongside white and polarized light, never a label on its own. That nuance matters deeply to me, and Dino-Lite makes it something clients can actually see for themselves rather than take on faith. For me, it’s not about replacing standard scalp analysis — it’s about seeing more.

I especially appreciate the adjustable lighting cap when I’m working at events outside my salon. Every environment has different lighting — bright daylight, indoor lighting, or strong reflections. Being able to adjust the illumination helps me get a clearer, more consistent view of the scalp wherever I’m working. I recently brought the camera to a Sephora influencer event to do live scalp analyses, and it held up beautifully even in that fast, hands-on setting.

I also have to mention the software from the Dino-Lite site — I downloaded it expecting something complicated and it was refreshingly simple. I can capture and track a client’s scalp over time, so I have a real record of where they started and how things change. Pulling up a genuine before-and-after of someone’s own scalp keeps them engaged like nothing else. And the image quality is what really sold me: sharp, clear, true color — which matters enormously when you’re reading a scalp, because the subtleties are the whole point.

I’m also building an online certification program, and Dino-Lite is exactly the kind of tool I’ll be recommending to my students as they set up their own practices. It takes real trichological rigor and makes it approachable and portable — something that genuinely works in front of a client. For me it’s not just a microscope. It’s how I want to teach people to see the scalp differently.”

Bringing Nuance to Scalp Care

Arisa’s thoughtful perspective highlights what makes visual evaluation so effective when grounding it in professional practice:

  • Observation Over Diagnosis: Combining standard white light, polarization, and UV fluorescence provides observational layers. It helps identify buildup, residue, and surface conditions without making clinical diagnoses.
  • Client Clarity & Engagement: Showing live, high-color-accuracy feeds helps bridge the gap between practitioner advice and client understanding, creating clear visual records over time using DinoCapture software.
  • Versatility Across Environments: Features like adjustable illumination caps ensure clear imaging whether working in a salon treatment room or a high-traffic event.

Arisa uses the AM4517MT-FUW this model has both Ultraviolet LEDs and White LEDs.

Side note: Not everyone needs UV lighting, for those users, we have other popular models for trichology that have only White LEDs

Note: As Arisa emphasizes, live visualization is a powerful tool for consultation and client education, helping specialists communicate non-diagnostic insights clearly without overstepping professional boundaries.
